Showcasing Microsoft’s bold sustainability goals
In 2020, Microsoft set some big, bold environmental goals to become carbon negative, water positive and zero waste. However, progress isn’t always linear. While Microsoft is on track in some areas, they are also facing challenges in others. Communicating this effectively is a challenge in its own right. Catastrophising the climate crisis can risk stifling action, whilst only focusing on the positive goes against Microsoft's ongoing commitment to transparency.
With this in mind, I worked with the creative director at Radley Yeldar to design an engaging and accessible report. The tone of the report balanced optimism and a celebration of Microsoft's efforts to accelerate meaningful progress whilst also acknowledging the challenges they, and society, face.
Bringing Microsoft’s employees to the forefront
Microsoft say that their employees are are at the core of their sustainability journey. We therefore brought their stories to the forefront. The images used on the cover and dividers of the report were taken by employees, in response to a brief we set asking what sustainability means to them. This brought a more human feel to the report.
By being so open with its content, thinking and methods, the report has furthered Microsoft’s reputation among businesses all over the world as an organisation to learn and draw from.
